Front and Back Rows: When to Move a Hero
Use the developer’s Underkeep explanation of frontline protection and retreating heroes to make positioning decisions without constant unnecessary swapping.

When does a position change help?
In its demo discussion, the developer gives a specific example: a frontline hero is low on health, retreats to the back and another character steps forward. Assess who can take the next pressure before making the exchange. That is more useful than moving characters simply because the interface permits it.

Does every back-row character need to move forward?
The developer says constant micromanagement is not required and that not all classes are designed to deal direct damage immediately. A support character may have a useful job without a starting attack spell. Inspect the hero’s actions and equipment first, and distinguish an unavailable attack from a character who can still help the party.
Can weapon reach change the decision?
The 2026 developer update says staves have long reach so a mage without mana is not simply left idle. Check the actual item and current build rather than applying a universal rule to all equipment. The sources do not establish every interaction with area attacks or special enemies, so avoid treating the example as immunity to all possible damage.
